'Ceramics in the Papakura District from 1858.'
2 October 2010 - 12 January 2011
Supported by ASB Trust, Portage Ceramics Trust.
This includes Drury Potteries and Fireclay, Titian, Orzel and Crown Lynn.
Also Peter Stichbury and John Parker.

I was alerted to this exhibition the other day, but the only name mentioned was Peter Stichbury.
So pleased that it's on for a few months as I will be able to go cheers

Went to this Exhibition today and was very impressed with the new Papakura Museum!
The Pottery Exhibition was only a small part of what was on display, but was extremely interesting.
Drury Pottery and Fireclay made bricks .... chimneys, urns, even dog money boxes ... all sorts of things[pics are coming] from the mid 1800's to around 1930.

There were two cabinets of Titian, Sherwood and Orzel .... lovely stuff. Though I was very surprised to see a Luke Adams/Crown Lynn Tiki pin box ... maybe they made those at Takanini as well as Christchurch?
There were 3 different Marlin shapes, a Shark, Dolphin and a pair of Penguins. A small Violin vase and a small Ti Toki like bottle ....? I hadn't seen any of those things before, other than one Marlin shape! There were many vases too, and those jugs with people painted on them that I've only seen in Gail Henry's book.

Crown Lynn and Amalgamated Brick had two cabinets of wares .... some lovely Handpotted as well as vases of all shapes and sizes .....photos to come.

John Parker had a cabinet filled with his perfect whiteware .... it looked gorgeous too!

Peter Stichbury held centre stage with some stunning pieces of work.

There was plenty of information and photos to fill out the display and it is worthwhile visiting.

One of the Arts Laureate winners 2010 .... and these photos show why.
John was originally inspired by a Handpotted Crown Lynn piece that he got a long time ago.....

Post  Ev Sat 27 Nov - 18:08

I have a very soft spot for Peter Stichbury pottery :cloud7:
Some of Peter's work in the exhibition was fired at the Crum kilns in the 1950's ....
all potters are connected by not only earth fire and water,
but another abstract filament of some earthly coil .....

I want to visit this exhibition again... to find out who curated the display...
ask about the Tiki pin box .... find out who the pieces on display belong to ...
take my camera and take photos of the things that I've never seen before.

No I don't think so. There were about 3 pieces that were fired at the Crum kilns from Peter's collection.
The display was a Potted History of South Auckland and I'm still trying to work out how John Parker fits into that picture scratch

This little one is made by Orzel and they didn't make screw tops for the large Ti Toki either. As far as I know only Crown Lynn made the screw top Ti Toki bottle and there is one on our Pinterest page -

Ev, I hope you don't mind me using your pics on pinterest. What did you mean by a small violin vase made by Titian? What did it look like and have you got any more Titian/Aquila pics from the exhibition?

Pinterest is great haselnuss as you can return to the source of the photo. I didn't take any photos on this occasion, but was sent a selection to use on the site. For the life of me I don't recall a violin vase..
