Any ideas on who the Union China.Co.Inc is exactly Jonno?
That's a new one for me ..... but very interesting all the same.

CHINa - Brownstone Empty Re Brownstone

Post  Jonno Fri 21 Oct - 22:56

No I am not aware of who they are ( were) but the title of the company ending in
CO.INC. indicates that it was an American company and that these plates were exported or Crown Lynn were trying to make out that they were making the plates for an American company.

However unless we could get back to the records we will probably never know, CL were very adept at spoofing the origin of their pottery adding the word British to the backstamp for example.

Nice little mystery.

Thanks for that mrnarna you are a real sleuth.
I just love the contrast between the two types of china.

CHINa - Brownstone Empty Brownstone

Post  gloworm Fri 13 Apr - 20:59

Hello. I was curious about this vitrified plate too. The one I have has the similar backstamp - though I can read mine better. in circle - BROWNSTONE made in new zealand for Burden China Co Inc. Google search shows this company as still existing with an address in California -and distributing vitreous china to the Asian market.
I also have another plate exact same shape/style in cream colour without any backstamp.
The made in new zealand part makes me think this may be a backstamp used by Crown Lynn in the later years when they were trying to enter international markets.

My thoughts are yes I think this is a backstamp used by Crown Lynn

Any comments or further information?

Thanks to gloworm for asking about pen holders, I found Brownstone d276 vitrified on the same page in the Decoration Advices so this would have been made in the late 1970's as the Wombles are a few lines down cheers
Must check if this is in the Tableware Patterns Gallery or not :scooter:
Yes Brownstone is in the Gallery, just had to add the decor number Very Happy

Hello. Have provided some pics - indications are that the Burden China is a backstamp used by Crown Lynn, possibly along the same lines of a marketing relationship as with the GIBPAT range, gibson & paterson by Crown Lynn.

CHINa - Brownstone Browns10

CHINa - Brownstone B_plat10

The 2 dinner plates about 250mm across. Cream weighs about 760gm the brown about 20grams lighter
Glaze is very high gloss. Cream compared to a forma shape oval plate is very similar glaze with same grainy colour differing in a high gloss finish.
The brownstone plate is a bit darker and redder than the supervitrified brown - quite similar though
I hope this is useful information. Basketball

CHINa - Brownstone Empty Brownstone & Whitestone

Post  gloworm Sat 22 Sep - 12:31

I am interested that you have included the Whitestone backstamp as Crown Lynn
seems the same as the one demonstrated in discussion below,
mine is plain with no backstamp.

Have added photo of Brownstone plate and backstamp,
further discussion re identification below
