marks - Crown Lynn Marks - Did they stamp manually ? Empty Crown Lynn Marks - Did they stamp manually ?

Post  mumof1 on Thu 24 Nov - 8:24

I came across this auction on Trade Me. Did they manually stamp like this in the early days? It looks like the number 12 in the gallery, but I have not seen this type of numbering before. I have a vase that looks exactly like a number 1, but a larger version with a manually stamped 4 on the base, just like this one.

Any info would be helpful, thanks sunny

Oh gosh sunshine, this is something that we have pondered about before ...
I will try to find the topic when I get a chance, as I should be doing so many other things right now!
Yes the Crown Lynn bisqued blanks that Salisburys decorated were stamped with numbers ... we are not sure if Crown Lynn or Salisbury's did this. We don't have enough examples of these so would appreciate more photos. Some seem to match the Crown Lynn shape number and some don't! So many puzzles ....

marks - Crown Lynn Marks - Did they stamp manually ? Dsc06310
Right, yes it is all a but confusing isn't it! Well this may well confuse you more. I picked up this No 11 a while ago, well I think it is an 11, does anyone have the measurements? (ignore the bizarre over-painting), but it has the no 4 stamped on the base!

mrnarna has/had a shape 11 so he may have measurements ....?
Actually this may help as that makes 2 stamped numbers that don't match the Crown Lynn shape numbers ..... and so we continue to search Suspect

This one has no number, but looks like a signature, do you know who it is, or is it the painter perhaps? Looks like a number 21 to me.

Great work !
Yes that could be the signature of the artist as it has been written through the colour on the base. Very interesting!

Thought I should say, it appears to be etched into the base, but the grey colour is pencil I ran over it and smudged so that the signature could be seen better. The base is actually a yellow / cream colour as you can see around the grey.

marks - Crown Lynn Marks - Did they stamp manually ? Dsc00411
I bought this one as an old clay pot for $7, quite large too, http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=454907301
listed under pots and planters, but thought it looked more like a CL salisbury vase with such a lovely picture on it, and the base when it arrived looked like this

I don't know what the numbers 18/9 on it twice mean, apart from the 38. would be the shape number? and again a signature etched into the clay, which is hard to make out, so here it is after I rubbed it over with lead pencil to highlight it

Am I correct?
