Salt - Adelaar was a brand name used by Orzel in the 1970's Dsc03514
I thought I would share this gorgeous piece with you all. I was attracted to it because of the glaze, which I think is amazing. I have no idea what it is or is for.

It has an unusual shape

Salt - Adelaar was a brand name used by Orzel in the 1970's Empty Adelaar Craft Potteries Vinegar? Jug

Post  Jeremy Ashford Tue 22 Oct - 14:11

I got this little beauty from Jill Kneebone's "Decor Revived" in Whangarei. Jill hadn't noticed it. We then found a few other Adelaar (or Orzel maybe) items in the shop. I guess I should photograph them. This jug matches nothing I have but it is so cute.

H 123-135mm, depending on where you measure, OD is 55mm.

Salt - Adelaar was a brand name used by Orzel in the 1970's Empty Adelaar Toothbrush Holder

Post  Jeremy Ashford Tue 22 Oct - 14:25

I picked this up at St Vincent de Paul, took it to the counter then noticed 2 separate repairs, at least one visible in the photo. Went back a few days later and threw two dollars at it. It's so odd.
H = 100mm, OD at widest = 78mm or so.
Salt - Adelaar was a brand name used by Orzel in the 1970's Adelaa12
(My photo has come up a bit dark.)
It is marked "Adelaar Craft Potteries" around the circumference of the base
but the marks are filled with glaze so I didn't photograph the bottom.

On tm I have seen a "Lipstick Holder" from the same series, same glaze.
Also a toothbrush holder and soap dish in blue.

Salt - Adelaar was a brand name used by Orzel in the 1970's Empty Small Adelaar Colonial Jug and Pot

Post  Jeremy Ashford Tue 5 Nov - 13:40

Prompted by Ev's topic, http://newzealandpottery.forumotion.net/t4064-orzel-sugar-in-the-fine-speckle-glaze#13806, I finally got around to photographing these two at Decor Revived.
The two items are similar, but not a matched pair.
I neglected to measure them but the jug stands only about 10cm tall
Salt - Adelaar was a brand name used by Orzel in the 1970's Adelaa13
The speckled glaze on the jug is a good match for Ev's sugar bowl.
The speckle on the pot is even finer.
Salt - Adelaar was a brand name used by Orzel in the 1970's Untitl11
The marking on the jug is buried in the glaze,
but the general depressions there match up to the very clear markings on the pot:
"Adelaar Craft Pottery Colonial Ware".

There was a larger canister from the Colonial collection with a transfer at the Salvation Army store for a few weeks but it has gone now. I guess I should take the iPad on my morning walks and photograph stuff when I first see it. I might get some help identifying unmarked items, or potters' marks that way.

Salt - Adelaar was a brand name used by Orzel in the 1970's Empty Re: Adelaar was a brand name used by Orzel in the 1970's

Post  Ev Thu 7 Nov - 15:43

I found a jug like the one from hon-john in the first photo with the indented handle. I hummed and haaaed about getting it as I found it awkward to hold as it wants to tip forward when it's empty. This means the balance is wrong, also it is rather heavy for it's size. It most likely will hold about 1 and a half litres. Thanks to Jeremy's enthusiasm for Orzel etc I decided to get it as I had never seen one before and may not see another. Plus it will add variation to my jug shelf.

Ev,
I thought I read somewhere that this was the classic Adelaar piece, or maybe I'm just dreaming!

I wouldn't mind one. It's kinda kookie.
I saw one on tm a couple months ago, but there was some damage so I flagged it.

If yours has a different glaze from hon-john's could we have a look-see.

I totally agree, Ev, thanks.
Wonderful photos.

Did you notice that it appears to be a match for the glaze on my Orzel basket weave?
http://newzealandpottery.forumotion.net/t4084-orzel-basketweave#14567

At the Fair I saw an Adelaar oil/vinegar jug, just like my one above, in the same glaze as this.
It was a bit expensive: $40 from memory. (Maybe less but it may as well have been.)

Those glaze colours would be my favourite Orzel/Adelaar ones.
Yes the prices were all over the place at the Fair. My friend got a Crown Lynn 504 Wall Vase in a soft green that didn't have anything on the back for $8 and she got it because she liked it and didn't realise that it was Crown Lynn hahaaaa.

Salt - Adelaar was a brand name used by Orzel in the 1970's Empty Adelaar Craft Potteries Colonial Ware

Post  Maryr Sat 7 Dec - 8:59

Here is a kitchen jar from Adelaar. 12 cm tall to rim, 14.5 to the top of the lid. The lid has that distinctive hollow knob - see Kiln Craft containers.  You can just make out the 'colonial ware' on the base if you squint at exactly the right angle!

The impressed base mark is easy enough to read in natural light,
but barely visible under the shop fluros, and a trick to photograph.

I keep "upgrading" my salt and peppers. I was using Country Fair for a while but I'm very taken with the green Orzel salt and pepper like Thelma's ones so, because these two Adelaars are different glazes, I might use the pepper for a cinnamon sprinkler,
not that I ever sprinkle cinnamon! The salt matches my vinegar jug (above) and the pepper matches my first Orzel coffee set (and the vinegar jug at the retro fair).

From my photo above you'd think they were modelled on the Leaning Tower of Pisa but they're not that bad. I'll try another photo. Done.

Oops! as I was photographing in the daylight I noticed that each only has one hole on top. What I took for pepper holes were dark glaze spots.

Salt - Adelaar was a brand name used by Orzel in the 1970's Empty Adelaar Bathroom Tumbler

Post  Jeremy Ashford Wed 20 Aug - 11:23

Green Adelaar Bathroom Tumbler and Toothbrush Holder.

The toothbrush holder (tbh) has an impressed mark "Adelaar Craft Pottery" but I can only see "Adelaar" and "Craft" through the glaze on the tumbler.

The tbh shape is already in the gallery: the tumbler is not.

The tumbler is slightly shorter than the tbh:
86mm H x 67 OD top x 56 OD base.
Salt - Adelaar was a brand name used by Orzel in the 1970's Tumble10
The glaze is closer in colour to the green found on Orzel Manhattan (115 beaker/vase shown) than to the green Orzel kitchen/tableware, but they may all be the same.

It has the same glaze inside, like the Manhattan, but unlike the kitchen/tableware which is white-glazed inside.

I "think" I may have one of the blue glazed toothbrush holders - I'll have to hunt it out to get a pic of the base, but from memory, it didn't have any identifying - visible stamps. Yet the pattern seems consistent, so sharing as a possible match or a dubious likeness...
