Scored this delightful piece this week such a dainty and attractive example of the potters art. Can't find on the gallery but curious that their registered address was 7 Totara Ave New Lynn near to Clark Street, the company was registered in 1976 but is now listed as "struck off". Comments welcomed.

Thanks Jonno, I don't know anything about Cindy Ceramics other than seeing the odd piece listed on Trademe now and again. Slipcast and always beautifully finished. Will check the old Phone Book listings that I have too.

That is a very interesting comment , I hadn't really looked at the handle in detail as I was more taken with the overall shape and decoration.
I guess all cup handles have a similarity to ears which we used to call lugs, also a curious use of language.

No sign of Cindy Ceramics in my old phone book notes....
I looked up Dictionary.com re the name lug, as this is a pottery term used for handles.
" lug - a projecting piece by which anything is held or supported."
No mention of ears anywhere and I thought there would be.
The form of a pot is likened to many parts of the human body...
the belly - the neck - the lip - the foot, for example Smile

Very interesting Ev, thanks. I also recall that the two projections left when sewing up a sack of grain or chaff were also called lugs. Curious that there is no reference to ears , maybe it is a New Zealand use although not mentioned in my NZ Oxford.

Pottery shapes are varied as the evolution and use of words in language it seems to me.

re Cindy Ceramics Mug for the gallery Empty RE: RE CINDY CERAMICS MUG FOR THE GALLERY

Post  Jonno on Sun 7 Jul - 17:21

Looking for something else and found that Cindy Ceramics was struck off the company register in 1998 and that it was previously called Phillip Brian Ltd , maybe Philip and Brian and that the directors had been
Philip James MAUDE, director, Nov '78
Cynthia Joy MAUDE, director, Nov '78

So they operated in Totara Ave from about 1976 to some time in the 90's

Perhaps these name will jog a memory?

At last I found a piece of Cindy Ceramics!
The same shape as Jonno's, but with a different decal and it's very pretty.

I agree very pretty and I think the fancy shaped handle is my preference.
I am also fascinated that every so often just one of these mugs pops up.
The company that made them may have been struck off but their lovely
product keeps going.

I had time to stop by Hemara's today and he was showing me photos from Crown Lynn days and said, "This is Phil Maude who ran Cindy Ceramics".
Phil's wife was called Cindy and Hemara said they ran their pottery at Browns Bay and a huge overseas order for mugs that were boxed put an end to their company when the big order was cancelled as they had put everything they had into making that order.
Hemara made many moulds for them.

re Cindy Ceramics Mug for the gallery Empty Cindy Ceramics on TM: another piece of the puzzle ...

Cindy Ceramics coffee set on tm:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Antiques-collectables/Art-deco-retro/Kitchenware/auction-791645544.htm

The photo shows coffee set, a canister like Val's (see following link) and a new canister shape, white glaze body with floral transfers, brown lids.

I think the shapes are a match for the yellow and brown that Val and I have been looking for the maker of:

Could all these shapes be Hemara's work???

(Weird stuff the autocorrect does on this machine. It changed Cindy to Cundy as Nicole has a colleague of that name.)

re Cindy Ceramics Mug for the gallery Empty a different transfer again

Post  Jeremy Ashford on Wed 7 Jan - 13:22

This shape must be burned into my brain because as soon as I saw it on the SPCA's mug shelf, late last year, I knew what it was. Mine has no mark for confirmation, but the spoon jar (handle-less mug shape) sitting next to it with the same transfers did.
re Cindy Ceramics Mug for the gallery Cindy310
inset is transfer on reverse

fi is selling a Cindy mug with a different shape:

Oh, by the way, unless this is a shape used by lots of English potteries I think it is modelled on this Royal Windsor one:
