Steenstra used Pipe Clay to make these pieces!
According to the records at the Museum and it all makes sense now!
This clay would have been dug on site at New Lynn and they would have worked nearby the pipe making and away from the white clay and fired their work with the pipes etc.
I just noticed an entry in the Decoration Advices that said Pipe Clay Vases and this would have been from around the mid 1960's, although all the pieces I've seen have the tiki backstamp from the 1945 to 1955 era according to Val Monk.
The vases came in several sizes and an ashtray and all had numbers for the records.
Edits to add that these were made from the mid 1960's, just as the records show and an old tiki stamp was used.
