Hi all

I have just obtained 3 crown lynn plates that have different designs with the words drive carefully.  The designs consist of cartoons of characters in a bar playing typical pub games but are probably worse for wear.  The clothing the characters are wearing suggests 50s or 60s,  On the back is crown lynn in gold with one gold star.  Does anyone have any information about these.

many thanks

Stuart

Hi Stuart,
Any chance of sending photos to the site so that all can see these delightful sounding plates? You can email them on newzealandpottery@gmail.com and I will post them for you no problem.

I'm going to be brave and stick my neck out here and put this into the Patterns Gallery under the title Drive Carefully. I've chosen the dart thrower photo, as I can't really work out what the other guys are doing while they are at the pub .... ?

I have frequented the odd pub now ang again and will offer two possibilities;-

1. The black board on the table looks like a cribbage board. Certainly in Scotland there is at least one of these in every pub, not just for playing crib but also used as a counter playing numerous card games. Is the gent drunk, dancing or both???

2. the man swinging looks to me like a skittle game where the string that is attached to the pole has a ball on the end that is swung to knock over the skittles.

I could see that having an attached ball/string arrangement for playing skittles in a pub, would definitely be sensible!

Peters, id have to disagree with you about the first one.

Hi

Its definitely "Shove ha'penny", and the other one is bar skittles, which I've only ever known as a table top game, certainly not large enough to swing on the rope!

There are three more pictures in this collection one is a man drilling holes in the pub holes going the whole length of the bar looks like pegs not sure at the other end with another man, bar tenders standing behind him not very impressed is this gribbage men might be scotts?
Second one is two men at a card table playing cards with handles of beer or mugs stack up on top of each other one man looks like a farmer the other a sales man.
The third one is a policeman standing over a drunk guy who is placing a crocked trail of dominos from the pub to where he is

OH swear word, swear word, double, double swear word!!!
This post had a link to a Trade Me ad for a 'skittles' cup.
I thought maybe a collector from this site would like to know.
What happened to the post I guess I'll never know but the sale should still be there if you search, it was less than seven days ago. Sad

Here 'tis. I found it! Very Happy

Would anyone agree with me that this pattern might be called
Pub Scenes Pat.No.781?
I have added it to the Patterns Gallery as Pub Scenes Pat.No.781 and as I have it in the Database, I would have got it from the early 1960 records. However I will check that out when I get a moment.
