I was so sure the story of the design on Last Wave was in Val Monk's book, I didn't bother to record it when I read it. Now I can't find it anywhere. Crying or Very sad Please, tell me the name of the Japanese man! ANy references would be appreciated thanks.

Ok that was an enlightening interesting exercise Smile
I found the person who designed Last Wave, just haven't found her name.... maybe you can ... it looks like it's a new book about Crown Lynn 20 years on called Really First Class by Catherine Davidson.

Last Wave designer is on page 16 of 48 .... all of it is interesting!

Edits to say that I found her name ..... Juliet Hawkins cheers
That name rings many bells, so I have to go and google her now!
Juliet worked on the Portage Ceramics Trust collection, cataloguing etc.
She is also classed as a Museum Specialist .... ?

I don't believe it! Razz
Juliet Hawkins worked at Auckland Museum. She was one of the casualties when Rodney made heaps of people redundant and tried to close the Marine Department.
I think I even have some of the NZ flowers she painted for Education!
However,
Juliet may have put the last wave pattern on the plates but the design itself was a quite well known one by a Japanese artist whose name begins with K.

PS I've just looked up the url. Yep, that's Juliet alright, holding a Last Wave plate! cheers

The design is derived from 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa' (or The Great Wave' or 'The Wave') ca. 1831 by Hokusai Katsushika (or Katsushika Hokusai).

I did, but I knew there was more to the story.

I think one would say "the style is derived from".
I have emailed Juliet and look forward to her comment.
