I won the deer and it was delivered to me at Val Monk's book launch.  There were great debates as to it's origin.  Cam brown declared that it wasn't Titian and signal-red said that it wasn't Terra Ceramics.  The all agreed that Hemara would know who made it.  The deer has a lustre on it which has been put on very thickly and has run.  This is not the petrol lustre that is on heather's Bambi.  Photos tomorrow.

The deer was extremely difficult to photograph but here you are -

The blue/green colour isn't glaze, but is a thick lustre that is very reflective ...

The Crown Lynn exhibition had several pieces that were just bisqued from Richard Quinn's collection and I can't think of a reason why any of them wouldn't be Crown Lynn. There is a Fawn in the Crown Lynn four digit records that I haven't seen yet, but this fellow looks more like an adult deer. I'm still leaning towards this as being made at Crown Lynn.

Showed this deer to Hemara Hemara to see if he could recognise who had modelled or made it and he didn't know who would have made it. Hemara did comment that not all of Richard Quinn's collection was Crown Lynn.  It is very low fired and quite absorbent, but no sign of who made it yet!!

The oriental guy has the typical Hobby ceramics glazed bottom but no initials that I can see.

The glaze splotches on your faun reminds me of the green Manhattan glaze.
Glaze on my chap has the same dark base with green but the green has lots of light splotches as seen on other Hobby.

You can see him here ...

Hello Kat, Here is a picture of a brown Aquila elephant and a very similar black/green elephant also a black/green smaller probable Terra Ceramics or Hemara Hemara elephant.

I was looking at some Blue Mountain pottery [BM] in Jill's shop this morning.

The black-base-blue-splotch glaze on some of these Terra or assumed Terra pieces looks quite like the BM stuff.

Jill said that every so often a piece turns up that looks like BM but has a white body rather than the typical BM terra cotta coloured base.

Would it be fair to think they could be Terra?
Is there other foreign pottery with similar glaze?

signal red worked at Terra Ceramics and she said that it wasn't made by Terra. Yes they did use a similar finish and they used white clay. I also saw some pieces with this same finish at Cam and Bev Browns and they said the deer wasn't made by them. So it is all just speculation at the moment until we find some more info.

Strange coincidence that the inscribed letters are "CB"!

And it was Chris Brown started Hobby wasn't it?

Kat. is your goose on site?
Is it same as haselnuss' one?

The goose is illustrated in Gail Henry (pl 12):
"Unmarked, maker's provenance. H: 11.5cm (tallest). Private collection."

The combination of "maker's provenance" and "Private collection" suggests this example belongs to the Browns. Don't expect a mark.

That haselnuss' one has the "CB" could indicate that it is the odd one out, but with the quality of the glaze there can be no doubt it is an original piece.

Perhaps when Ev or Val next visit the Browns it would be helpful to find out whether a "CB" mark indicates Cam sr, Cam jr, Chris, or none of them.

The Faun and Lady look good together.

lamp - So is this a Crown Lynn deer? Empty Dolphin Lamp for sale

Post  Jeremy Ashford Sat 30 Aug - 14:04

Damaged but cheap. Repairable. Not my cuppa.

The dolphins, the base and the glaze look like Hemara's Terra Dolphin.

Clearly not Blue Mountain as base chip shows white body not red.

Kat, I love the lady bust and the fawn goes nicely with it! Gail Henry talks in her book about the Black Forest dark green/black glaze on page 172. It was used during the Orzel/Aquila time.

Jeremy, I saw that auction too and another one a few months ago with just the dolphins in green/black without the lamp but I am worried that they are hobby ceramics or from the USA.
Because postage cost would be very high and they look like they break easy during transport I didn't purchase them.
I got caught out recently when I purchased a horse online which looked like a Aquila one and turned out to be hobby ceramics. I still like it but I paid far too much for it.

Did Hemara make the three jumping dolphin statue?

I have got a model of two green/black kittens sitting together with the Terra Ceramics sticker attached. I'll get my husband to take a picture next week. I know Terra C. also made the same size two puppies model.

I guess we should ask Val or Ev to ask Hemara if they are his dolphins.

It can be embarrassing buying Hobby but if you buy for the looks of the object father than resale value it shouldn't be.

I have some very nice Hobby Ceramics pieces, well interesting at least, including Clay Craft teapot and canisters, my wise oriental man, and my garish half size flamingos.

There is a flamingo on tm atm, "handpainted" but 4sale as a "flamago" I think.
