Green Knobbly Gravy Jug.
Size as per other Orzel gravy jugs but knobbly.
(see: http://newzealandpottery.forumotion.net/t4380-orzel-gravy-jug-yellow-and-orange-same-in-brown#15309 )

Looks like a big drip of glaze on the handle!
teapot - Orzel very odd wine thing - Page 2 Knobbl10

Val told me, as I had guessed from her photos, that my tea/coffee jug is a slightly different green from her items above. My three bits are all slightly different green but I think they were supposed to be the same glaze.
teapot - Orzel very odd wine thing - Page 2 3knobb11

Later, Edits to add, in reply to Ev, below:
I have seen the gravy jug shape in knobbly before too but was not taken with the glaze so walked on by. Couldn't resist the green though. I think we will eventually find many identical shapes with different surface treatments, plain, knobbly, cartwheel etc. Just takes time.

------------
THE DRIP!
Just in case anyone missed the drip on the handle I've made up a montage of it.
teapot - Orzel very odd wine thing - Page 2 Drip10

Note also the green glaze deep in the handle. There appear to be three separate glazes, green, gold and lava, or are the gold and lava a single glaze?

I just got a jug like the Hikurangi one. (Just a buck at Sallies.)

Today I saw a ramekin that had this knobbliness, but without the green glaze. Just all over bland brown and it wasn't nice at all.

Ooh ooh ooh!!! I have one of these mugs as well! Found it at the second hand warehouse we often go to and I was just totally drawn to the colours! Usually I make myself resist pretty things unless they are CL but I just had to take this one home. My mum and my husband don't like it at all though, they say it looks mouldy...

Do we want a photo of my one as well? Who was the maker of these? Smile

Yes please leish to a photo of the Orzel mug Smile

Plus just to let you know I think we have all of those patterns in that auction except the one that has the name ripped off the box. Thanks though.

I just realised that the little Aquila jug at Hikurangi is green knobbly too.
The lighting in my photo is so bad I didn't pick it earlier.

http://newzealandpottery.forumotion.net/t4501-small-jug-with-aquila-sticker

So, green knobbly was sold as Aquila. Maybe not all the shapes, but the presence of the sticker on the jug is indicative that it was an Aquila line.

Likewise the wine thing at the Retro Fair also had an Aquila sticker, as you pointed out to me, Ev, but I can't remember the glaze.

Where is that Aquila jug in the gallery Jeremy? Did I miss it?
This tells me that we need a better system for the Galleries.
I haven't been 100% happy with the way it is now. I will think about it and see what comes out of it.
Yes the bottle at the Antique Fair was the knobbly green glaze. Sheesh I recall that it had an Aquila sticker on it. This range is a lot nicer than others they made, perhaps this was why it got the classy Aquila label. Though that glaze is so fluid that it must have run off many times and ruined kiln shelves!!

leish sent a photo of her mug for the thread -

Though it's the circular patterned one, not the knobbly green glaze, it does have the same green glaze at the base.

Mouldy works, leish.

Taking your lead there I can see the whole knobbly green collection, in both knobbly and the wheel/flower of the two-finger as "antique bronze", or even "ancient bronze". The "mould" colour is verdigris, the oxide (?) that forms on copper, and the brown is copper or bronze. Works for the glaze, works for the shapes.

Your mouldy mug looks like something that may have been salvaged from an ancient shipwreck.

Ev, correct. The jug didn't make it to the gallery and I didn't follow it up.

I see the reasoning for wanting to keep Manos' lovely animals in Titian, as some of the Orzel home wares and commercial packaging seems so mass-produced, but now that we are seeing the same shapes appear as Aquila, Adelaar, or Orzel with the only differences being glaze and sometimes, but not always, mark, I think a separate gallery including all the Orzel brands is the right way to go. Because the galleries are alphabetised the different brands would be separated automatically.

Trying to sort out what you are saying in my head .....?
One Gallery ...... will be too big to scroll through.
I'm thinking along the lines of a gallery for each label .....?
All under the Titian heading..?
I'm going to rename all of the green knobbly glaze Aquila.

I think Orzel, Adelaar, Aquila should have a gallery of its own separate from Titian.

Ev, I see you've separated galleries. That is going to make for a bit of guesswork when Orzel/Adelaar/Aquila items are not clearly marked, and many aren't.

For example, in these photos ( http://newzealandpottery.forumotion.net/u153 ) the jar on the right is clearly marked Adelaar, but the glaze has obscured the mark on the jug (left). One would assume it to be Adelaar too, especially as it shares shape (although not size) with the one you posted yesterday.

Taking Val's knobbly mug as another example, the Orzel mark is no guarantee that the piece is not Aquila, but then the glaze alone is no guarantee that it is.

There may be Orzel pieces yet to get to the gallery. I'll have a look for you later, when the sun comes up.

Here's one. Ramekin with stick on handle in this link: http://newzealandpottery.forumotion.net/t4523-four-more-orzel-shapes#16006

Yes it will be tricky I know, as I've done this before and given up and put them all back together. But if we are not sure where they go they can go into the Titian Gallery which will be correct. I haven't finished but have run out of week.

teapot - Orzel very odd wine thing - Page 2 Empty Another very odd Orzel thing... this time a planter

Post  Maryr Sun 2 Mar - 17:26

A recent acquisition... but its found its natural place at the back of my shelves already!  A planter. It has a hole in the bottom for drainage and 3 holes in the top for string. Probably most often found with straggles of expiring mint hanging down.  18 cm tall. Thanks (I think) to Kat who spotted this marvel.

Another Orzel/Aquila piece in antique bronze (green knobbly) glaze.
I have already posted the shape elsewhere but had to show the glaze, which unfortunately makes the mug shape no less ugly.

Post  Jeremy Ashford Fri 21 Nov - 14:29

After turning my back on Val's one at Onerahi market and watching an unpleasantly glazed one on tm for too much money for a long long time I came across this in my travels north earlier in the week and although it is a bit plain the $5 price tag made the purchase relatively painless. This is the fourth one I have seen now.
teapot - Orzel very odd wine thing - Page 2 Thingi10
These are strangely shaped but perhaps not as twisted as photos suggest so I took a shot down the centre line to show an almost symmetrical view. The neck tilts toward the spout but is straight up and down in the other plain.

Oh no, I found another one, three sips but two are chipped.
Same glaze as Val's one: I call it antique bronze.
teapot - Orzel very odd wine thing - Page 2 Thing110
I posted this primarily to seek feedback on the stopper:
does anyone think it could be original?
I like the shape it makes sticking out the side.

The cork in the top, below, is from the side of my other one (previous post): the one from its top was too big.
teapot - Orzel very odd wine thing - Page 2 Thing210
And here it is again in a montage designed to show the range of blue-green in the glaze. The coffee pot, left, is one extreme. You can get a bit of an idea from the first photo where one of the sips shows two different greens. I've used it again here. I bought the beer mugs (x3) on the strength of the glaze on the smaller mug which I knew to be an Orzel shape.

If you consider that the towel I have used as a background has not magically changed colour between photos, then you realise that different lighting situations also have an effect on the final image. The green of the large beer mug looked grey on TM.

The knobbly body seems to create a more violent reaction between glazes.

Between members we have so many shapes in this glaze that I think there must have been a full range in it. And as at least one has an Aquila sticker I think this glaze would indicate an Aquila piece.

Is the stopper wood or ceramic Jeremy?
I've never seen a stopper on one of these wine bottles before, but they must have had one or even two.

Thanks, Ev.
It's turned timber.

It was in the same opening when I got it. Even though it has a full cork, unlike the top fitting the cork has only the thickness of the bottle's wall to hold it in place.

teapot - Orzel very odd wine thing - Page 2 Empty wine thing with different treatment for gallery

Post  Jeremy Ashford Thu 12 Mar - 15:20

This one with the sandy clay has a plain ribbed body rather than the knobbly body of those seen previously, so they were possibly sold across the Orzel range with the knobbly being Aquila and this I would guess just Orzel. New shape then.
teapot - Orzel very odd wine thing - Page 2 Thing310
banded wine thing with sand-clay body

It looks as though it has had two dips in the glaze to give some opacity to it (but maybe just to cover this difficult shape).

The grey-khaki colour at the bottom is the unglazed sand-laden-clay body. The sandy body must have been hard on the fettling tools: I often see marks where lines have been ground off but on this the have simply not bothered to take out the mould line.
teapot - Orzel very odd wine thing - Page 2 Things10
____________knobbly___________banded____________knobbly_______
three "things" showing different body treatment

I have also seen these in two other glazes, maybe three.

I'm tempted to call them "amphoras" but from a quick googlesearch the images for amphora show two handles and no spout: pity.
