Val Monk's latest blog post is about the wares that Crown Lynn copied -
http://valputaruru.blogspot.co.nz/2013/11/um-derivative-or-copy.html

Over time have found that they copied countless different wares from almost all of the English potteries, plus some Scandinavian ones as well.

Please use this topic to put any pieces that you find that are copies so that we have a record of these pieces.  The shape number or a photo of the piece that you have found was copied would be great.  Also the name of the Pottery that it was copied from.

Which pieces of Crown Lynn were copied from overseas potteries? Empty Lord Nelson

Post  Jeremy Ashford on Fri 22 Nov - 8:43

Lord Nelson

Amongst Marianne Turner's collection of Crown Lynn jugs, I found a few also by Lord Nelson Pottery.
Here's a Lord Nelson on trademe: http://www.trademe.co.nz/pottery-glass/porcelain-pottery/other-british-manufacturers/jugs/auction-664155392.htm
(attention Banker!)

The Lord Nelson (floral) transfers were all different from the Crown Lynn ones on Marianne's jugs, but the shape is the same as the 6033 as seen in the gallery at http://www.newzealandpottery.net/gallery/Crown-Lynn-Shapes-with-Four-Digits/Jugs-6000-6650/6033-pic_4689.htm

There is something about finding out that this was copied that makes my heart sink a little, but they had such good taste to choose this unusual art deco type vase. There is a saying that to copy is the highest form of flattery .....

I made an eBay search of that pottery and as there are 221 listings I must presume they are or were a large concern. Curiously, nothing else there at all like that cup and saucer set.

This is a  saucer that I sent to the 'no names' gallery as cornflowers blue with yellow band.
Recently in Dunedin I found a trio with this exact pattern from an English pottery. I went back to buy it (he wanted quite a bit)or photograph it the next week and he'd sold the cup and saucer. I was too mean to buy the plate! I should have. This must be a pattern where CL has bought the same transfers as the English firm.

Post  Jeremy Ashford on Mon 17 Feb - 12:00

I picked up a glazed version of what I presume is the 360 from Tikipunga marked just because it was $3 and gave it to a friend in Auckland who has the Clarice Cliff white.
We swapped them over to see how long his wife would take to notice.

To be honest, the Clarice Cliff is much nicer piece of pottery. I think I had the white CL at some time too but have not been able to locate it recently. The Crocus/Lotus/Waterlily shape was very popular and so you see similar around in Blue Mountain and other potteries too.

Which pieces of Crown Lynn were copied from overseas potteries? Empty CL 419 and Grindley cafeteria mug

Post  Jeremy Ashford on Wed 7 May - 17:19

This is still a work in progress. I do not own the Grindley mug pictured but have a similar one from Burslem which in addition to the monogram also has "YMCA" impressed in the base. (I remember seeing another on tm.) No photo of that as I am without iPad atm.

Of all the vitrified mugs I have looked at so far (and I have three to add to my "Diner Mug" topic when I can photograph them) this one comes closest to the shape of the Crown Lynn 419.
Which pieces of Crown Lynn were copied from overseas potteries? 41911

I think this particular Grindley mug is actually newer than my 419. My Burslem appears to be older.

My (may be Grindley) Railways mug and others like it were the models for the Temuka and Crown Lynn Railway mugs.

Oh, btw, can anyone identify the monogram?
("WIC Cafeteria Service")

Thank you to William, trademe seller "majortrust" for use of his photo.

Which pieces of Crown Lynn were copied from overseas potteries? Empty castware coronation mug

Which pieces of Crown Lynn were copied from overseas potteries? Royals10
1953 Coronation Mug, Crown Lynn
1949 Royal Tour Mug, Portland Pottery, impressed marks "PPC" "ENGLAND"

The 1949 Royal Visit to Australia and New Zealand of George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth (known to most of us as "the Queen Mother") was called off because the King had health issues, but the cancellation came too late to stop production of a yellow-glazed slipcast commemorative mug by PPC Portland Pottery Ltd of Staffordshire.

Four years later Portland Pottery was taken over by Ridgways.

That same year Crown released an identically shaped mug (actually slightly taller), differing only in the relief decoration, to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

Many souvenir items had been pre-ordered for the 1949 tour, according to reports from Australia. The Sydney Morning Herald, February 2nd 1949 (page 2), under the headline "Royal Souvenirs Not Dead Loss" commented that "... souvenir mugs ... may soon be looking down from bathroom shelves with father's shaving brush standing in them." According to the same article some retailers regretted cancelling their orders as even though the tour did not go ahead there was still a demand for the souvenirs. A photo of the Portland mug accompanied the article:
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/18103100/1017319?zoomLevel=3

Up until seeing this English mug I had thought the Crown Lynn commemorative mug was a New Zealand design, unique but in keeping with other Crown Lynn wares of the same time, the Fancy Fayre (also based on English pottery) and other pieces in the 400s gallery.

I have not yet found any evidence of the Crown Lynn mug, or one similarly styled, being used in Australia as a coronation commemorative, nor do I know whether the Portland mug was released in New Zealand. Mine was bought in NZ but may very well have made it here from Aussie. The shape differs from any I have seen for the 1947 tour of South Africa.

Which pieces of Crown Lynn were copied from overseas potteries? Empty Shape 51 was copied from Crown Devon !!

Post  Ev on Tue 14 Jul - 18:57

How devastating to find that this shape was made by Crown Devon [not SylvaC] and I know who would have been the copier as it is just a splendid shape!  These 51 jug/vases are only found in the experimental glazes so were made very early in the 1940's.
I was gutted!
