forma - New Forma Cup .... - Page 2 Empty Re: New Forma Cup?

Post  Jonno Sat 21 Jun - 16:46

Have just caught up with this  thread and I am a bit puzzled. It seems to me that there are a number of cups shown that may look like Forma but are not in my opinion.

Since moving about 6 months ago and having to seriously downsize my collection it is hard to pop up with photos and measurements but it has always been my understanding that Forma was designed for J.C.Penney US retailers and that the cups had a new and novel double annular ring which docked with the saucers especially designed to accept these cups .

Many of the cups I see on this thread are not Forma , in my opinion, as they do not have the double docking rings and the saucers are not designed to suit double rings either.

The only similarity I can see is that the cups have the flared shape at the lip similar to the Forma range.

ref P 114/5 CL a NZ Icon and pp 39,42,64,80&147 CL Collectors Handbook. Monk.

From a design point I was very impressed when I first read about this feature and found that  one could casually offer the cup to the saucer and it would dock with little or no
effort. First released 1973 . The flatware was also stylishly designed from a shape point of view.

Trust this helps rather than confuses. The image below is from the gallery and although a little hard to see the lip or flare almost shows as a line around the body of the cup not a gradual or smooth curve up to the top edge as some of the examples appear to me to have.

Hi Jonno, yes you are correct about the Forma Cup 3027 first made 16.4.71.

However we are trying to determine the New Forma Cup 3048 first made 30.1.80.
There was also a New Forma Saucer 4048 first made 21.3.80 and a New Forma Jug 6057 first made 30.1.80.

It's all guesswork as there are no drawings or photos to give us an idea as to how the New Forma shapes look, so it's a process of elimination at this stage.

Thanks for your thoughts though as the reason for this topic hadn't been pointed out and hopefully now it has.

Thanks Ev , Got that now . Still a number of Photos on this thread that to my eye are
not Forma and may be confusing the search.

You will recall that I made a set of Forma in hand turned Rimu and I know how detailed the designs are as far as the cups and saucers are in particular .

I note that the dates you are using are all earlier than the dates I quoted from Valerie's books and wonder if your dates are when the design was first entered into the system and the later dates are the release to the market?

Maybe Jan Pots Hubby has a point, some never got there.

Keep up the Good Work

Janice, Kat has put measurements for this saucer up above. 16.3 x 14.6

I just measured mine and it is 16cm across, which matches the Museum's measurements.

The Crown Lynn bisque measurements will be the final measurement, as they fired lower for the glaze firing.

I agree with you Janice. cheers

Interesting to see the shape of the 'New Forma' from the Portage Files , a drawing not a photo, 3048. Certainly quite different to the original Forma 3027.

I wonder if the 3048 has/had the double docking rings as 3027? Has anyone found a
3048 and if so can we see a photo of the base please.

Many of the cups on this thread are not Forma by my eye even though the photo's do not show the base. The soup cups ,several, are certainly not.

Have done a brief scan of the Portage site and the 3027 examples are easy to spot.

That profile drawing of the New Forma Cup looks like it has the same docking rings Jonno. Nobody has found one yet, so it was imperative that we got the drawing on the site to help find one.

My 2 cents worth.

As Jonno points out the original Forma cup and saucer were designed with the "self docking" feature achieved by the well in the saucer and the two rings on the base of the cup. This was used as a major selling point, no more slopped coffee in your saucer while carrying a full cup and saucer. But like all cup/mug shapes that flared out at the top rim they were prone to chipping. To overcome this there was talk of a new shape that would be more straight sided. I don't know if it was ever produced.

Also I would agree with Jonno that many of the shapes are not Forma.

Thanks Dale, the last drawings are from Tam Mitchell's modelling records and they have been signed off by him. I will add the Cream Jug for a short time to show you.

It was only recently that I came across these records at the Crown Lynn Museum, so for the longest time we had no idea what the New Forma pieces looked like.

Thanks Ev. Tam was a great guy. Shorts and bare feet year round. Had to make a new item from start to finish for him as part of my training. Draw, model in clay, model in plaster of Paris, create master then production mould. He passed me but I think it was to get rid of me rather than because it was any good.

Jonno, you mention making a cup in Rimu. To see him take a cylinder of Plaster of Paris and make something was quite amazing. Of course he was turning vertically not horizontally. Non cylindrical items he carved by hand from a block of plaster.
