Hi this is from Jim's collection - pic courtesy Kat.  I am not sure if we have a pic of a lidded sugar bowl in the gallery. (omitted to get the number on the base of the bowl, sorry!)  This looks like Polynesia.

Rightio we have an Earthstone Lidded Sugar as 1228 and got that from a price list that shows the one without the 'topknot'.
Perhaps the "New" 1229 shape has this wacko topknot?

What do you all think about this? ?? ?? ??

I have a landscape earthstone coffee pot that looks like 1239 truncated cone ... And I think the number on mine is 1239 tho it's not easy to read. One of us will go back to Jim's soon and get that number so don't worry meanwhile...

There won't be a number on the lid and we have the number for the sugar bowl which is 3042. I guess we are stuck in Crown Lynn clay again! Though the 1229 new lid makes sense to me ~_~

I think this could be the "new lid 1229"  as it looks like 1228 with the knob bit added....
(I found a sugar & 1228 lid the other day, I was unsure if we had it or not.. Janice)

What if this is the 1228 old lid and the lovely rounded lid is the "new" 1229 one?
There are more of the streamlined lids around so maybe that's the way it went?

I wish we had more photos to compare -- I searched the net yesterday for a couple of hours, to see if anything "new" came up... Alas not ! Sad

Perhaps the dates will help us to work out which is which?

1228 Lid to Truncated Cone Sugar Basin 3042 was first made 8.12.76

1229 New Lid to Truncated Cone Sugar Basin 3042 was first made 30.5.77

That photo that Janice put on showing the Landscape pieces is from a 1980 Ceramco magazine so the streamline rounded version will be the 1229 ..... won't it?

Which would make the topknot lid rather rare wouldn't it Laughing

Our minds read alike LOl.. I though of checking the dates of manufacture against that leaflet that I posted for Marl to look at.  However, I can't find a date on it.. but see you have it its 1980
Thinking about it more - the top knot could be first, being more traditional then the smooth look for a more modern feel about it?

My Earthstone Dinner ware Advertising and Display Material from 1978 shows the lovely rounded lid, so that settles that really I reckon.
I will put the two lidded sugars into the right places now.

sugar - Earthstone sugar bowl and lid Empty Re Earthstone sugar bowl and lid

Post  Jonno Thu 5 Nov - 14:30

Found this Earthstone/Landscape pattern Lidded sugar in my reduced collection and have just read the notes under the heading above, whichever April that was.

My pieces have no numbers just CL Earthstone New Zealand BS.

Bowl is 98>87mm Dia OA x 65H, The Lid is 100mm x 29mm OA & the flange , 85mm dia., fits inside the bowl, 90mm Inside Dia. with 5mm clearance OA.
There is a bowl at Portage with no lid and lower band different (Fault?)
There is a Coffee Pot at Portage also in Bisque ref 2009.1.381 (No Lid) but noted as
80mm Dia. at Lip
I note the change of lid shape ie 1229 shape in pale body colour on basin 3042
and Lid 1240 on Pot 1239.
Perhaps they needed a different lid for the Pot to suit the design although according to the notes the Pot came first 1977 and the sugar 1978?.
Will be bringing my Bowl & Lid to Portage this month.
Yes that is a hair line crack that has been stabilised.
Have just re-read the above and realise that without the measurements of the other pieces there is still some mystery left. The Bowl lids and the Pot Lids are different diameters however .
The question of rarity mentioned about the 'Topknot" style lid is also uncertain as there seem to be only a very few lids extant of any type.
Finally I have called my piece Landscape but can't actually prove that it is as there are no numbers.

Hi Jonno,

Your sugar bowl is definitely the Landscape pattern.
I have no doubts that the lid is a stray from another pattern, as all of the lids that I have seen in the Earthstone range [eg Landscape] are in the cream colour that matches the sugar body.
Your sugar bowl is shape 3042 and the lid shape is 1229.
The 1240 is the Coffee Pot lid in the same rounded shape and only goes on the Coffee Pot. I couldn't work out why the Coffee Pot lid was being compared to your sugar lid, but I hope this may be sorted out now.
