An early Royal Oak butter plate handpainted in gold New Plymouth Greetings and a picture of the mountain, and groups of hand painted flowers.

Wondering why there are two stamps on the back.

That's just one of many questions that need to be asked about this piece.

"Who made the plate?" is one, but ultimately I think that will prove to be unimportant.

Another is: "Why?"

It looks like some sort of special piece, and perhaps a test at the same time, with its mixture of hand work and transfers.

Were the transfers there before it came into Royal Oak's hands?

Etc.

A great find dollcrown and the wavy plate shape isn't one that I'm familiar with. Perhaps these were acquired as blanks and decorated for a special order?

I have since been told that this plate would have been made by Owen Salisbury (as part of Royal Oak.) RO opened a warehouse in New Plymouth in 1956 so it was possibly made at about that time.
