After seeing Kat's new bit of Lucow and adding a link to the Lucow topic I settled down to the slow process of reviewing today's new Crown Lynn trademe listings via dial-up.

So, what I found was a vase the seller claims to be Ngakura ware in the following link:

and I thought to myself, "Is this Lucow glaze?"

So I came straight back to the forum to see what I could learn about Ngakura.
I saw a 1069 belonging to fi, THEN I saw your own piece, AND TonyK's 1069.
Made in the late 60s at Luke Adams. Good. Perfect place and time.

Ev, in different ways all four pieces noted above look like Lucow.

Is it just the lighting in your photo or is your Ngakura ware Lucow glaze?

I just saw zana.d's trinket box and now I have no doubts.

The trademe seller osmannz, says of Ngakura in the q&a that
"Generally the wares are in shades of greenstone blue & purple."

So I checked up on greenstone glaze and saw it was something different altogether:

btw, the set in that link is your stacking shapes again, including the 6610 jug,
so you do already have an image of the 6610 for the gallery.

That listing caught my attention with that heading! If the trader had said it was a 660 in the Ngakura glaze it would have been acceptable. Ngakura ware is a souvenir range mostly finished in the Lucow glaze, butive seen some in the Basalt as well e.g Zana's pin box. Oops lost my train of thought as I watch another good snapper come into the boat.

Ev, thanks for the confirmation on the Ngakura glazes. The name Lucow was not used in any of the descriptions.

The description of Zana's trinket box says "Brown with blue glaze" but the colouring in the photograph is green and blue. I know you have written about the basalt glaze elsewhere but I get no results for "basalt" from the search engine.

I assume it was a glaze from Luke Adams. From the name "basalt", a black igneous rock I would assume basalt was primarily a black glaze.

2 + 2 gives me mrnarna's Cleverley set ( http://newzealandpottery.forumotion.net/t2447-mark-cleverley-designed-coffee-set#4588 ), mumof1's Cleverley mug
( http://newzealandpottery.forumotion.net/t3191-could-this-be-a-mark-cleverley-mug#10058 ), both with black predominating over brown, mrnarna's 1084 coffee pot and set, some pieces of which have more brown emerging, and even my own 1188 Cleverly mug, which has photographed mostly black in the gallery shot, but, as it sits in front of me now, has more brown than black. Are any or all of these basalt?

As I have done with "Aquamarine and Lucow", and you have done by adding "greenstone" to the title of the condiment set described above in this topic I think it would be very useful to have a topic with "basalt" in the title and some clear examples of the glaze and/or a selection of pieces with variations of the glaze.

I would be happy to work on that but I need some direction from you.
Also, as you have references to the glaze from various documents they too would be a valuable inclusion in such a topic.

I stand to be corrected re Zana's pin box is glazed in the Lucow glaze, but I have seen those pin pots in the Basalt glaze. I must mention that there was one of those pin pots in the Titian Exhibition at Papakura, so I would say they were made by both Luke Adams and Titian at one time ...?
Re the Basalt glaze topic, I did write down everything that I could find in the records that I have and will have a look for this before I start another. I found this was one way of identifying shapes made in Christchurch and it worked well too. Though it would have been several years ago, I'm sure I still have it as I don't like to throw hard work away.
If I recall correctly the two main glazes were Lucow and Basalt, but there was one other .... Homestead or something like that ...? I could turn all of this researching into a full time job...... but I already have a full time job

I re-read your topic on Crown Lynn items made at Luke Adams http://newzealandpottery.forumotion.net/t1355-crown-lynn-shapes-made-at-luke-adams-in-christchurch#3561 and you mentioned both Lucow and Basalt there.

I just want to note that the Ngakura range consists of a lidded Cigarette box, an Ashtray, a Dish and three different Pin Pots. There is a plain lid for the Pin Pot in the Four Digit Shapes so there will be 7 different shapes all up.
