Gloria's big pots including Yvonne Rust

Post  Jeremy Ashford on Sun 10 Apr - 13:56

Previous titles:
Holy Grail: Yvonne Rust confirmed, and now ANOTHER!
Holy Grail: Yvonne Rust (two down one to go)

Yes, if you live in Whangarei and collect pottery this is the Holy Grail.
(Even beats Greengables.)

Unlike Kat I don't really like opshops and I'm always in a rush to get out as soon as I can but these stopped me in my tracks!

This was my most exciting opshop pottery find even before I found out what they are.

Palpitations.
Could they be?
How would I know?

Take them to show Kat on Tuesday at Val's.
Email pics to Marcus and ask.
Email to Joss for him to show to John Madden.
Get hold of a copy of Maverick Spirit.

I've been to the library to check the book and I am satisfied. (Unless they are school of ...)
I have sent the comparative photos for Marcus to double check: he gave me a "could be" on the goblets alone.

Sorry Kat for jumping the gun but here they are:

The Holy Grail (x2) !!!

A pair of a Goblets by Yvonne Rust

about 140mm high, rough as guts stoneware with a lovely ring

These look so old and damaged but are in perfect condition as far as I can tell.

comparing the decoration with a known Yvonne Rust work
from Maverick Spirit, Theresa Sjoquist, p154

I have sent an email to Greg Barron but I think he is travelling atm.
I will contact Susan Rogers when I can.

Aside:
As we drove to the Tikipunga market this morning, before my research at the library, I mentioned my (possible) discovery to Tus and his response, "Oh, my old art teacher: she said I had talent" (at painting, Greymouth 40+ years ago): Tus became a doctor rather than a painter.

Kat, I don't know what I will do with them yet. Selling is not an option for me so it's either keep, trade, or give away. The Yvonne Rust Gallery actually has very little of her work so that might be the best final resting place for them.

I'll bring to show on Tuesday.

Who am I to say who made a pot. I am just a novice collector of handmade  pottery.
So I have sought opinions from those who would or could or should know:
---------
10/4/19
"Yep, I would say they most definitely could be her work. They tick all the right boxes and she was making pots at the quarry, well done!
"Most of the Rust pots that I've seen are rough as guts, that's the beauty of her work.....a lot of it was pretty Medieval looking in form and finishing and quite often covered in an ash glaze." Marcus
---------
30/4/16
"Yeah, they're Yvonne." Akke Tiemersma. Laconic.
---------
03/5/16
"Oh yeah definitely!" Susie Rogers. Enthusiastic.
Local clay.
More likely The Nook than Beechy Road.
ca1980
---------
I was hoping I might bump into John Madden while in Auckland but that didn't happen.
---------
I am pretty pleased with things so far but I will check in with Greg Barron when he returns in June for a third opinion from someone who knew Yvonne.
---------
I found a couple more pieces in the local shops that I thought might be but neither Akke nor Susie had any enthusiasm for them so unless something dramatic happens I'll keep them to myself for now.
---------
16/5/16
I just had a visit from our water-filter man, Dave Boyd. He saw my mugs, which are hard to miss as they are everywhere and asked if I had any by Yvonne.
When Yvonne first arrived in town (Whangarei 1970s) she visited Dave, then a leather worker, for a pair of tyre-tread sandals, value $15. The trade was for six plates. Unfortunately over the years, in regular use, the plates have all been damaged and gone.

Kat and I made a nice find today. We bumped into each other at Hospice shop in front of what appears to be another Yvonne Rust goblet. Kat let me buy it.

I took this as a good reason to visit Greg Barron as he had not seen the previous find. On that one, he goes along with Susie and Akke.

I got the impression Greg was more confident about the new find. He said that he thinks he remembers the glaze, as in he used the same Yvonne Rust ash glaze while working with her, and thus it likely is her work.

Also, he thinks the two pieces are the same potter, which certainly helps.

alone ...

and with company:

19 and 14 cm high

I have seen three other pieces by Yvonne with fluted bases like this.
.
---------
15/9/16
I had the latest Rust goblet with me today when I popped into the Quarry, after our collectors' group meet, and Akke was there too so I showed it to her. Yup.

---------
6/10/16
We had Gloria over for dinner for her birthday yesterday evening (Israeli cuscus with lamb) and I was showing her my Yvonne Rusts. It turns out that Gloria's garden is littered with Yvonne Rust sculpture that I have totally failed to notice. (There should be an emoticon for facepalm here but I can't see one!) I will endeavour to get some (decent) photos on my next visit.

Gloria's large pots including work by Yvonne Rust

Gloria's pots came with the property. I don't know who made all of them but at least some are clearly the work of Yvonne Rust.

Wow these are marvellous pieces Jeremy.
Did you check them all for her mark?
I believe that she didn't mark a lot of her work, but there is the occasional piece.

I didn't notice any marks at all, Ev.
Dusk was falling when we got there and I was rushing around trying to get pictures while the light held, with the usual iPad full and having to change to Nicole's phone after the first two shots. I will look again next visit, and I will also see what similar work I can find in the Rust book.

I will also check with Susie, Akke or Greg when I see them.

As Gloria bought these in situ she does not have a record of the potter/s.
The guys she bought the house from were gardeners and although I think they were originally from Wellington I think that the work that I don't have the experience to identify as Yvonne's is, at the least, likely to be local.

The face is definitely Yvonne and the lidded pot sure looks like hers too.
I welcome any suggestions.

I must look out for Yvonne's work next time I go to Akke's place, Ngunguru Pottery.
