110mm high approx with visible join line around the middle under the glaze where the two halves have been joined.

Ev... gut feeling says no. But I have been wrong before. There were a lot of people making lamp bases. Halls seems to be the most prolific.

This shape isn't in the records and I've never seen it before, but like Val, I can't say for sure as I've been proven wrong before.
The metal fitting on the lamp would be a deciding factor wouldn't it ....

The fitting looks right for the period and there are a few very obscure lamps from those early years, but this one doesn't look quite right in my opinion. Maybe someone could ask for a picture of the base? That would tell us more if it isn't covered in felt.

By the by Val, do you remember hearing if any of the early Crown Lynn decorators saw any formal training in Art Schools in the UK? Like Central School of Arts and Crafts for instance?

A pic of the base has now been added. Glaze is very uneven. I would be very surprised if it was CL. I would guess that it is made in NZ though. I think there are a lot of NZ made lamps out there that we have yet to put a makers name too

I agree with Val that the glazing on the base is very untidy and messy which I haven't seen on Crown Lynn.  They were very particular about bases and going by this I would say it definitely wasn't made by them.

Teaandcoffee I am away from home this week so cant check my notes but I dont recall any reference to formal training for Doris Bird or Mary Bailey. Both were recruited from English potteries. From memory the Crown Lynn magazine extols the warehousing skills of Harry Bird rather than the far more significant decorating skills of his wife!

Ethical question: are we confident enough to advise our seller - and thus potential bidders - that this is unlikely to be CL? I started but chickened out.

Thanks Val. The reason I ask is that I'm reading as much as I can about Dora Billington who taught Olive Jones, R.N. Field, Kenneth Clark, and William Newland how to pot, and indirectly Graeme Storm at the Central School in London. R.N. Field gave the initial training to many of our pioneer potters such as Len Castle, Peter Stichbury, Doreen Blumhart etc, so its possible to say Dora Billington is the forgotten great grandma of the New Zealand studio movement.

The decorating style of Eileen Machin in particular seems to follow many of the precepts of Dora Billington, so I was wondering. A free calligraphic style painted by a confident hand with a long brush and a preference for leaves and other folate motifs.

hon-john sent these photos for this topic ....

This is what he says "I have this jug that is very much like the lamp base and I am sure that it is Crown Lynn. No markings on it but it certainly looks and feels right."
