I don't know this potter, but there is a distinctive style that shows up well in this wine set.

Greig Barnett Empty Greig Barnett on Portage

Post  Jeremy Ashford Sat 21 Mar - 14:13

Portage has a ton of Greig Barnett.

Wonder why.

Barnett search on NZ Museums:

I noticed Jim had a mug that looked very like the ones at Portage.
On reviewing them I think it is. Sorry no pic.

I noticed that there were many pieces of studio pottery by Greig Barnett in the Portage collection and wondered if Richard Quinn took a fancy to his work and collected what he saw ..... ?

I have replaced the photos and I would like to add that I see his work on a regular basis and always recognise who the maker is.

Now I see the photo I am reminded of his work too.
One of the few handpotters whose work I'm actually likely to recognise.
The crimps or folds in his pot bodies are quite distinctive.

Greig Barnett Empty who made this striking face mug? Greig Barnett.

Post  Jeremy Ashford Wed 27 Jul - 18:22

Seller said John Fuller but the mark doesn't seem right.
I bought it anyway as it is so striking.

Does anyone recognise the work or the mark?

Kat,

I've got to agree that the mark looks more like Greig Barnett's than John Fuller's.

Unfortunately what you see is pretty much what you get as the mark is not fully formed, so the surround is just not there.

Unfortunately I shot with light from the right so it looks like the letters are hollow but they do stick out.

The seller is relying on the provenance of her late mother, who met many potters and bought new from them, marking the work with names on sticking plasters.

Amazingly I don't own a Greig Barnett mug. Or should I say another?

Hi all....As a collector of John's work and familiar with his mark I would suggest that this is not his work and not his mark. So, as suggested by Kat & Co. Greig Barnett it is unless the seller can show clear evidence that this is an alternative John Fuller mark.

I agree with Kat and Moksha.  I see plenty of Greig's work up here and this would fit.  Personally I don't like his forms.  I don't like this mug form, so it tells me it's his work.

Thanks Ev, that makes three opinions so could either you or Kat move the topic to studio potters please.

I know exactly what you are saying about Greig's shapes but I am nevertheless entranced by this face.

I have checked through the mugs at Portage. I am not disagreeing with the three of you but I do have some observations about this mug relative to the Portage mugs.
The handle looks similar but it has no exact match. I do not know the proper potters' way to describe things but here goes: by its relative size the top of the handle looks as though it is where the handle is pulled from but the finish at its edges makes it look "pushed" (pushed on) rather than pulled.
Most of Greig's mugs have a significant amount of lip and this doesn't.
None of Greig's mugs have the simple overall Tenmoku glaze.

Moksha, I have no disagreement with the seller. She had good reason to accept her late mother's attribution/provenance, which in relation to other sale items has proved correct but in this instance it would appear that something was amiss. I had my reservations about maker (which is why I presented it in this way) at time of purchase but was happy to buy anyway.
