Oh wow that is a choice piece Kat cheers
I can see similarities to Tippett and van der Putten re the shape.
It's just superb!!
Any idea what those markings on the left are Kat?

Toby Stafford Empty Is this Toby too?

Post  Jeremy Ashford Fri 30 Oct - 15:34

It was a poor day up North for me today. (I spent $5.50 all up!) This mug was my favourite find and the maybe the cheapest thing at Kerikeri Hospice shop at just 50c.

Could it too be by Toby Stafford?

It is unmarked but I have reasons, seen on this topic, to think so.

1 the handle, as on the one Kat gave me, above
2 delicate rim at base, as seen on the last pot with star mark
3 clay and firing, as on the teapot

87mm H x 62 OD top x 80 OD base

It is very fine work by a skilled craftsman.

Kat, you seem to be the expert on this guy, what do you think.

Yeah, Marcus showed me something similar from his pantry but I can't remember who the potter was, and apart from the handle I don't remember the piece either.

He explained that, on his example, the handle was pulled from the bottom and finished at the top, when usually they are started at top and finished at bottom.

Much later.
I think it might have been an Andrew van der Putten that Marcus showed me.

Two more Toby Stafford mugs.

I thought I had posted this brightly-coloured Toby mug already but cannot find it. I bought this in an auction box because my other porcelain one has sustained some damage: this is not as nice but it is intact.

porcelain, starfish mark, 1990

I knew I recognised the handle on this recent acquisition from Kat & Co. and got it into my head that is should be a RM-A, but Marcus put me right, suggesting Toby, based on both handle and foot. I checked my photos, the one above mostly, and confirmed Marcus's attribution.

stoneware, and obviously this one is not marked

That's three Toby Stafford mugs I have now, plus another I'd like to think is his. Always happy to have more!

Toby Stafford wood-fired lidded pot with spoon cutout in base.
Ash glaze and a bit of salt too. A potter's pot I think.
Toby Stafford Tobypo11
140mm H, marked with Toby's star and '89

Right top is inside lid with wadding marks and heavy blush.
Right bottom is base showing Toby's mark and typical turned foot.

Oh, while I'm here, this is my most recent Toby mug that I hadn't got around to posting for a month or two.
