Clifford Smith was an Auckland domestic-ware potter.
His mark has similarities to one of Len Castle's marks so I wanted to show his work and mark here.

This work is very distinctively Clifford Smith's. His mark often gets confused with Len Castle's.

Clifford Smith's other mark from the Ferret.
This has a B as well as the C and the S.
If I remember correctly the B stands for his middle name.
The Ferret is concerned that the finish on the handle is different to the other CS mark and I will add photos to show this, but I am confident that this is the same potter.

There was conjecture at one point that this mark (the one with the B in it) was actually mis-attributed in the book to Clifford Smith when it was actually the mark of the early and elusive but influential potter Charles Bond-Smith (still undocumented).

Looking at this pot, I don't think that idea can be right and it is more likely to be Clifford Smith's mark I think.
