Is IGA made by Crown Lynn ? Dsc01812
This is like a miniature yellow colour glaze saucer, and I read somewhere that they were made by Crown Lynn. Can anyone confirm this as there is no evidence in the back stamp gallery?

Oh please .... I need the measurement for that saucer
Is it what is often called a demi ... tasse ...something saucer?
I have yet to find one of these ..... or even a cup!
These and the cups get listed as Crown Lynn on a consistant basis. I haven't seen anything to say that CL made them, but perhaps IGA were under a bigger umbrella and if I knew who they were I could perhaps find something to confirm this ..... though I have a very strong feeling that they will be Crown Lynn.

Sorry, should have included the measurements. It is 120mm diameter and the cup indent is a smidge over 40mm. I had always thought that IGA stood for Independant Grocery Association. In the 60's or 70's, I seem to remember that small grocery shops or dairies were sometimes IGA stores (sort of like 4 Square), but I could be wrong, it has happened many times. Embarassed

Yes I remember the IGA stores well Wink
Had a quick look and found that Crown Lynn supplied:
4 Square with Gingham [exclusively]
L.D. Nathan
Foodstuffs
Maybe IGA used L.D Nathan for buying in bulk?

IGA Stores were a very large group of independant grocers especially in the South Island connected to Rattray & Son who were Dunedin merchants they were also in the North Island.

The idea was copied from an American group and ceased around the 1970's. The original group was known as Grocers United Stores G.U.S.

I doubt that they would have traded with Nathans or Foodstuffs but certainly had enough group buying power to buy in bulk from Crown Lynn and distribute to their
independant members.

There are plenty of entries for United Stores Jonno.
Would they be one and the same do you think?

No , I think we could be getting confused between Grocers United Store G.U.S.
and United Stores a department Store buying group which I have mentioned earlier under this heading. IGA stores appear to be a later name used by at least some of the earlier GUS stores. The common criteria being that they were grocery shops independantly owned and operated but with a common buying group.

Foodstuffs, Four Square stores were similar but part of a co-operative organisation and they still operate as the smallest stores of this group.

There is some interesting info at <http://longwhitekid.wordpress.com/2012/>

Hope this helps.

Found this comment on an IGA listing -
"Made by Crown Lynn for IGA [Independent Grocers Association] as individual giveaways as a promotion to valued customers in the 1960's"
The backstamp has moved to the Gallery now Very Happy
