Thank you, Ev. And now I know how to read that mark. BC, and not some stylised A. Sometimes the potter doesn't make it easy for us. Wink

mugs - Wine jug and sips - Page 2 Empty Milk token container

Post  Hannele Sun 23 Aug - 16:08

I am fascinated by these containers. I am not familiar with them, and they often are works of art. Is the cork original? None of my others has a lid of any kind. This mark looks like CM:

I would say that the cork would be original.
Fresh milk was delivered every day in those days and milk tokens were put into the empty bottles at the letterbox and the milkman left the fresh milk and took away the empty ones with the tokens inside. Wonderful really and the milk had a layer of cream on top that was fought over to put on the hot porridge Very Happy
Sorry I can't help with that mark Hannele....

Since I discovered these containers, I have been reading up on them. Way back in the day in the Netherlands, when the milkman made his rounds, payment would be cash (or maybe credit). No tokens. So no token containers. Smile
I am still blown away to find them. They are hand potted and so beautiful. Just wonderful.

This is so beautiful! I have no idea where it came from, there are no marks anywhere, not even a sticker on the fitted box. The pieces are in mint condition, the pot has never been used. The blue glaze has an amazing crackle.
