Wharetana Ware Lidded Box
This never seen before beautiful box turned up at Te Toi Uku yesterday thanks to Steve who wanted it verified as Wharetana Ware.
He said when he bought it he was told it was a one-off piece made for someone who was retiring.
This is only the second piece that I've seen that has the tongue protruding.
The inside lid shows that it has been slipcast, but the base has had a lot of work done on it by hand, as it isn't as crisp.
Also the figures have hand decorated koru on them.
There could be other versions around with differing decoration.
I was thrilled to have seen this in the real world
