I am posting on behalf of Rick Rudd -
He sent me some images of some hand modelled but commercially produced ceramics potted by "de Gury"

He has one saddleback bird with "Saddleback / 1939 / De Gury / N.Z" on the base
an American Uncle Sam character mug "designed by D.Clement / potted by de Gury"
a wall pocket " de Gury / Made specially for Tanfield & Potter Auckland" on the base.
And a few others.

They are figurative, made from warm-bodied clays and glazed.

I will upload photos - any thoughts or info would be appreciated - I'll send back to Rick.

Thanks,
Finn

ps- any thoughts on whether the name is de Gury / de Bury / de Burg ....

Hi finn, I contacted Brian Ronson and he is keen to find out more too and is allowing me to add his words and photos of the pieces that he has.

"I very much like de Burg’s work, and have 4 pieces. One is marked ‘N.Z. Centennial 1939’, and I suspect he also demonstrated at the show as did O. Jones and E. Matheson. Personally, I consider his work to be important in the NZ pottery context but I have never been able to find anything about him. ¬†
I would love to get an answer to the mystery of who he was. Might need an expert on the NZ Centenial Exhibition to help! ¬†Interesting to see that 2 of my pieces were the ‘same’ as Rick’s. One of my photos wasn’t the best but it does say ‘NZ Centennial Ex. 1939’ which is why I think he might have demonstrated there."

Brian would like to know what plant is depicted on the Wall Vase?

Hi Ev, Hi Brian - thank you for the pictures! How interesting.
Hmm, interesting connection to the Centennial exhibition! My best guess is that your vase depicts karaka berries and leaves [Corynocarpus laevigatus] (the leaves look strange, but the berries look right)
Cheers, Finn
