Crikey you don't see this Kokowai 1018 Bowl very often and this one turns up in the UK !!
This is what the Wharetana Catalogue says about it -
"Typically Maori in conception and carving, this piece represents a Bowl for the use of Sacred Kokowai or red ochre. This had special usages in old Maoridom and was supposed to ward off evil spirits. Taniwha monsters form the Body Carving and three Tiki heads for the base, the tongues protruding to make the actual balance of base."
