I bought this part coffee set as one item that had been together from new as far as the seller new. Colour of glaze on mugs is more blue than the green top of the coffee pot. Pot has foot ring and mugs do not but do have swirls in the ground? bottom. Pot is 200 mm high and mugs and jug 85 mm high. No marks at all. Are these likely to be Clay Craft/Kiln Craft etc

Mike,

Mugs and jug are Orzel: you will see them in the gallery.

Coffee pot is a problem.
I think it looks like Orzel but doesn't necessarily feel like Orzel.
I have one like it which I bought as part of my Frankenstein coffee set:

http://newzealandpottery.forumotion.net/t4415-holiday-puzzle-frankenstein-coffee-set

I have still not posted pics of that but it came with cups etc in the same shape as these currently on trademe:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/auction-722253945.htm

The glaze on mine differs from those in the auction, but my coffee pot is a perfect match for my mugs, sugar, and creamer. Yours is a different glaze again. I like it.

Because the shape of my mugs has not been seen in a known Orzel glaze (even though the trademe ones have the "drip" which is almost an Orzel trademark) I am reluctant to commit.

I like your mug shape. It is quite ordinary but well proportioned etc.

Summary:
Mugs and jug Orzel,
Coffee pot I just dunno.

If you can identify the cups in the auction you may identify your pot and my set.

Later.
My set:

They all have shiny bottoms and stilt marks, which along with the difference in feel suggests they are likely Hobby Ceramics or similar. If you are not familiar with Hobby ceramics you can make a search on the forum and bring yourself up to speed.

The consequences of mine being Hobby are that even though the glaze matches, the shapes (moulds) may not necessarily come from the same pottery. I think your coffee pot probably is Orzel, and may be the shape to match the mugs, even if the glazes do differ. Although ... the auction ones do not have glazed bottoms, and they do have the drip, so they may yet turn out to be Orzel too.

Thanks Jeremy...very helpful. I had another look in the Orzel gallery and spotted the mugs. I had considered that was them but none of my Orzel has had that very obvious swirl pattern in the flat bottom of the base. The clay colour is darker as well than the Orzel I have. That put me on the wrong track! When I look at the mugs in bright sun,as I am now, I can see some of the blue in the mugs in the coffee pot and some of the green in the pot in the mugs
Coffee Set - is made by Orzel Img_1037. So they might be a match.
They have taken the glaze deep down into the cups as well. Very nice as I consider them more closely.

Nice to see the blue in that photo.
I didn't pick it up in the earlier one.
Mine are just plain brown.

The colour on the coffee pot looks more orange than on the cup:
is that for real or a trick of the light?
Also, what is the inside of the pot like: blue?

The "spiral" on the bottom: might be a sanding/fettling/smoothing mark.

The pot is not as orange as it looks in the photo, more of a tan. The mugs are a slightly different shade, very close but a tad darker. Seems to be a slightly muddier glaze on the cups and jug as well. The colour inside the mugs is blue at the top but runs into a green the same as the coffee pot inside. I have tried to photograph these as well as the rings on the base of the mugs.

Seeing that glaze inside the coffee pot I don't think Ev would disagree that it is Orzel.
So another new shape for the gallery.

I love that cats eye glaze Orzel used inside its tableware.

I was pretty sure it was an Orzel SHAPE when I got mine, but pity it was not a genuineĀ
Orzel PIECE. (Bought on trademe in a rush. I keep getting caught out by Hobby Ceramics.) I'm pleased you have confirmed it for me.

I am undecided if this set is Orzel, but will put it into the Orzel Gallery and show it to the Brown family and they can confirm for us.

This glaze and style is also very similar to the little ramekin with the broken handle (which Jeremy photographed and I accidentally bought!)

Coffee Set - is made by Orzel Empty Another Coffee Pot

Post  mike67 on Sun 11 May - 11:02

Bought this one for $4 yesterday. Less colour at the top but that distinctive blue/green is totally over the inside matching the earlier pot and the lid is identical in glaze to the salt pig (Orzel?) pictured with it. The coffee pot body is a shade darker and glossier.

Coffee Set - is made by Orzel Empty Orzel coffee Pot

Post  mike67 on Tue 1 Jul - 20:55

I picked these up for $3 the two. The glazes are identical - blue and the brown. Was wondering if there was an answer to the coffee pot definitely being Orzel?

Mike, in your earliest post you have the coffee pot in similar glaze to an accompanying Orzel mug. Then one of it with an Orzel jug in the same glaze! Then a second pot in the same glaze. And now a new one accompanied by an Orzel shape sauce jug in matching glaze.

Unfortunately my similar jug is Hobby Ceramics and accompanied by some very odd mugs in matching glaze, however when I first saw the shape of the coffee pot it screamed Orzel at me.

I think you should make the call here. You hold all the cards.

I'm wondering about the salt pig though: as similar as its glaze is, the flare on the bung hole looks like a Putaruru detail to me, rather than Orzell.

Here is the salt pig that I used in the coffee pot shot originally.Coffee Set - is made by Orzel Img_1520Coffee Set - is made by Orzel Img_1521Coffee Set - is made by Orzel Img_1522

And the 3 coffee pots together. Apart from the amount of blue glaze the pots go from gloss to semi-gloss to almost matt.Coffee Set - is made by Orzel Img_1523

And the other salt pigs I could easily find that I always thought were Orzel. The far right one is the one in the coffee pot shot again.Coffee Set - is made by Orzel Img_1524
All vary slightly in height and width.

Well the tops of those pigs are all the same aren't they!
They don't flare out at all, just a bit hollow in the middle, so I take back my comment about Putaruru. That base certainly looks Orzel.

Back to the coffee pots, note the tab on the lid, which is consistent with the lids of Orzel tea/coffee/sugar canisters. Not all makers tabbed the lids of their tea and coffee pots. This one is consistent with Orzel tabs.
