John Madden mug with different 70s mark for GALLERY (?)
John Madden mug with different 70s mark for GALLERY (?)
Could this be John Madden from the 70s?

When I first saw the mark I thought it was the "Greatest American Hero" division mark from the mystery marks but on seeing that it wasn't I promptly forgot about it. Scrolling through my photos today I spotted a collection of John's marks from NZ Potters and it clicked.
The Ferret has provided the right hand mark, with the circle surrounding but this one has not appeared yet. See:

I have been a bit confused about John and mugs because when Joss returned from seeing him at Karekare early last year he said "no mugs, just tea bowls" which I then interpreted as meaning that John had not made mugs but on consideration it could also have meant that John had no mugs left for me. I have since seen mugs advertised on tm as John Madden.

75mm H, tenmoku on stoneware, marked on base
I have yet to visit John at home so my only awareness of his work comes from what I see on the net.
I can believe that the date is correct, and although small this mug is bold in shape befitting my knowledge of John's work.
opshop buy.

Re: John Madden mug with different 70s mark for GALLERY (?)
I'm not familiar with John's work Jeremy and would like someone else to confirm this mark, because to me the stamp is on it's side, which is rather unusual.

I agree, the mark is sideways.
I only ever see John incidentally but will try to contact him.
It may be some time.
