Super vitrified ware was for the restaurant trade etc, so may have been for a particular business, OR the words have been applied to a plain white plate at some later date. That wording does have a more modern ring to it to me, but there are more knowledgeable heads than mine on this forum, so wait and see what they have to say.

thanks cat-a-lat and ev

I actually have 2 of these plates, and was wondering how do I tell if the writing is under the glaze? or on top or just something someone wrote on it. I doesn't come off with a rub of the thumb, one plate does have a couple of sractches in the wording but very minimal.

As the plate is super vitrified the words must be under the glaze, as this ware was made for heavy use by the hospitality industry and institutions.

You guys were spot on, I thought the only way forward was to run them through the dishwasher to see what happened, and what do you know half of the wording slipped off. I think it must of been some type of glass paint
because it was quite thick. Anyway I know have 2 nice large dinner plates that we will be using and can be washed in the dishwasher!

Awesome! I just didn't think the wording looked original to the plates :-) Cunning way of finding out!
