hon-john asks if this Papel mug is Crown Lynn .... Yes it is.
The base reads:
Drawing Board
Greeting Cards, Inc.
Manufactured
Under License by
Papel
Japan
As Derek has a mug with Papel on the base that he got with the 300 mugs he bought when Crown Lynn closed down - I would say that it has been manufactured by Crown Lynn

Not so sure that Crown Lynn did any manufacturing in Japan.
Found this though "Phil Papel founded Papel Giftware in 1955 in Palm Springs, Calif. Their mugs were often decorated with catchy sayings that reflected the times. Many of their wares were made in Korea and Otagiri, Japan." from http://www.creators.com/lifestylefeatures/collectibles/antique-or-junque/vintage-mugs-still-haven-t-captured-a-profit.html
and there's http://www.giftshopmag.com/press_release/2009/07/papel_giftware_license_becomes_available_to_the_industry
which lists Korea, Taiwan, China, Thailand and Indonesia as countries of manufacture.
I'll email Papel Designs and see if I get a response from the source.

I just re-read John's email and he says it has MADE IN NEW ZEALAND around the base.
Here is a link to Derek's Papel mug which also has MADE IN NEW ZEALAND on it...

Re: hon-john asks if this Papel mug is Crown Lynn .... Yes it is.
I've exchanged a few emails with Stan Papel of Papel designs. He confirmed that the Papel logo or trademark on both mugs is theirs. He also said that Papel never authorized any manufacturing of their products in New Zealand. They did "work with Drawing Board back in the 80's, so it's possible that they manufactured it under license."
Update More recently Stan Papel has recalled "We worked with someone in New Zealand who I think was with Valentine Greetings. Gray... somebody. He wanted permission to decorate the mugs in New Zealand, and we flew in the decals." Stan's been in contact with their manager at the time and may be able to supply more details.
