Kiln Goop or as Tony calls it 'Kiln Snot'
I have a fabulous kiln goop door stop ....
a beautiful work of art in deep blues.... I'm sure I can see a face on the side .... yes I can.
It's really a brick from the kiln that was used to fire the raw materials to make frit.
This hails from the Australian company Ferro where my other half worked while we lived there for 7 years. Layers upon layers of frit has melted onto the kiln walls and these had to be replaced every so often.

And here's a motherlode at Te Horo:
The closest kiln was bult by John Wineera, the other two by Mirek Smisek.
Inside one of the Smisek kilns (by the time of the photo just used for storage):
Inside the Wineera kiln which had been in recent use when I took the photo:

Several years ago before all the construction in New Lynn started I went around and managed to find quite a bit of that sort of thing...half bricks covered in big lumps of glaze. Some just sitting on the surface next to trees. Still a wee bit there, but most will be deeper down I guess.

Tim were you able to work out why it was where you found it?
Did its location reflect earlier known activity onsite? Or could there be other explanations for where it ended up?
