1063 Eared Soup Bowl
Hi Everyone, I was at my friends place yesterday talking pottery in general and she showed me a small dessert bowl with lugs, unmarked on the bottom, it had exactly the same glaze as the 1078 mug above. Quite a burnished look to it. I said to her it looked like crown lynn but the different glaze got me. I also have a jug in my collection somewhere with a dark brown glaze that almost looks lustred, it is the same shape as the ballins jug I think. So perhaps these were made here in Chch?

Re: 1063 Eared Soup Bowl
I thought you might come across some of these pieces Thelma .... coming from that part of the country Any chance of a photo of the bowl sometime ....as it sounds like a 1063 Eared Soup Bowl. I think I saw one of the Planter Pots yesterday but thought that the number on it was too high .... I was wrong darn it! The dark brown glaze is rather distinctive and where it is thicker it breaks to black. Also see what is on the bottom of the dark brown jug and let us know. Great Stuff!!!

Hi Ev, Will do, I will get a picture of the bowl from my friend, the jug may take a little longer as I do not know just where it is at this moment Cheers Thelma.

Re: 1063 Eared Soup Bowl
Great !! As that's the same shape as the 1063
Does it have fine lined rings all the way down on the outside ...?
As the drawing shows them and the glaze pools in these rings and gives them definition.
I forgot to mention that I saw two teapots/coffee pots yesterday with the same spout as my Mark Cleverly one. One had a very rounded bottom which is most unusual - they both had a matt very dark brown glaze on them...... and no markings ....so that's another puzzler

Re: 1063 Eared Soup Bowl
Just saw an auction for the 1063 soup bowls which came with the original box.
On the box it says Made by Titian Potteries
Also I have an 1180 large spice jar that has Titian on the base ....
Hmmmm .... anyone have any thoughts?

Re: 1063 Eared Soup Bowl
Question.. I have some of these 1143 bowls - but the number on the base are a mirror image i.e.back to front. As I don't know how these are made i.e a stamp impressed on the base before firing or poured into a mould, slip-ware/cast-ware. How could they get the number on the wrong way? Just curious .

Re: 1063 Eared Soup Bowl
I've never done any slip casting, but I know that they use moulds and I would take a stab that the mould has the number in it in mirror image so that it comes out the right way. However it appears that there were many that were done the wrong way around...... for what reason I don't know, but I would guess that the mould makers were learning? Any other ideas out there?
Re: 1063 Eared Soup Bowl
This appears to be a number with at least one dot.
Dotted numbers were impressed. This one sticks out
So I think they have take the bit with the number on and used it in the mold.
It may not have mattered that it was reversed as it was still identifiable.
