It is difficult to read the number, and I have tried all sorts - b&w, tinted, etc but it is still unclear, I think it is 5641

Can't say that I've seen that shape before and it does look like 5641. The records only go to 5640 so I can't confirm it's description. Vitrified ware start with 56??. Its an unusual colour for vitrified ware.

this is really annoying me that I can't make out the number. The wee sugar bowl is quite small : 60mm high and 110mm diameter (just under 2 1/2 inches high and 4 1/4 diameter) or 70mm (2 3/4") with the lid on. As you can see, I have tried several ways of getting a clearer shot of the number, but the whole thing is too small

My eyes say 5641 for what that is worth. For hard to read numbers I find that using a Loup and viewing under bright sunlight can allow more certainty.Slowly move the angle of the piece while keeping in focus.

5641 Sugar bowl and Lid - is an Ansett Casserole Empty another "5641" is supervitrified as well

Post  Jeremy Ashford Wed 8 Jan - 11:19

mumof1,
check out this listing, particularly the second picture:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=682885101

As it is Ansett and Supervitrified I would suspect it's for serving hot food.
You wouldn't get a sugar bowl this big on a plane. (Maybe in a lounge.)

Maybe Ansett gave smaller servings than and Qantas (5620)!

As it is vitrified I'd expect it to be either 16xx-19xx or 5xxx;
I don't know whether 3xxx items were vitrified or not.

I have asked the vendor to advise the number.

Yesterday I picked up a 1427 (lid is 1428) in a plain cream glaze and see that it is very similar to the 5641 in size and shape but is not ovenproof as the 5000 series are. No backstamp.

or as my Geometry Teacher used to say Quad Erat Demonstrandum  (QED)
'That which was required to be shown' .  and as we crass schoolboys used to paraphrase
Quite Enough Done.

Seriously there is some pretty cool sleuthing done on this site.

It took a lot of magnification to see the number and then I thought it started with a 1. But when I checked out the one in this thread the shape and measurements are the same and the backstamp is the Ansett one.

5641 Sugar bowl and Lid - is an Ansett Casserole Empty RE: 5641 SUGAR BOWL AND LID - I THINK

Post  Jonno Sun 22 Nov - 20:26

Have just realised that my post a little back up this thread where I mention picking up a S/basin with lid  (Jan8 ?) failed to say that this is a different shape altogether and  have just seen that it is in the gallery as 'Pagoda Shape' 1427 pot ,1428 lid. My sample is in cream no B/S and is a distinctly different shape to the 5641. No photo as my camera battery is flat but here is the one from the gallery. Notice the flare at the top of the pot and hard to see in the photo but there is also a distinct indent at the bottom of the pot.about 8mm from the base. Sorry for any confusion.
