Gloria's Morris and James
I wrote the following last September but didn't get around to posting.
Prompted by a more recent visit.
---------
Lunch at Gloria's today.
As we were leaving I had a look at Gloria's cup collection hoping there might be a rare CL one. No such luck, but an amazing collection of differently-shaped handles.
Then, on the next shelf down, I spotted this wonderful collection of pieces from Morris & James: mug (2 of), milk and sugar, c/s, and wall (?) plate.
As we were already leaving I didn't take the extra time to photograph the bases. Plate had an impressed stamp and everything else was hand written.
Nicole and I visited Morris & James once, must have been in the 1990s at the latest. We didn't really feel compelled to buy anything because it all seemed so expensive at the time. We did get a small square terra cotta tile with penny farthing picture like Janice's ones. It has been in continuous use as a door stop (between door and wall) at Auckland.
Twice now I have dropped out of tm auctions for M&J mugs as the prices have gone so high. One set was the same pattern as Gloria's mugs etc above. They look as good in real life as they do in photos.
