Royal Oak large pitcher, large dimpled mug GALLERY
I finally got to the fourth opshop at Whangaparaoa.
There I found a pitcher and two mugs in Royal Oak lava glaze.
Read the sign carefully. The smallest writing says Gutter Kitties.
I didn't get any measurements but the mug should give an idea of the size of the pitcher. They are both huge, maybe 5 and 10 inches high or 6 and 12.
I would have liked to buy but just don't have room.

Royal Oak Lava Glaze
"LAVA GLAZE"
The lava glaze never featured on the Royal Oak domestic ware. The glaze above is a gloss brown with a white dip.
The lava is a stoneware glaze mainly used with vases, as its impervious to moisture.
This glaze circa 1980 was created by Owen Salisbury in his personal studio.
The total production sold was 100 items.
Below is a sample vase, 20 cm high along with 2 pages from Owens day book, showing
early analysis of the volcanic structures used in his recipe.

Re: Royal Oak large pitcher, large dimpled mug GALLERY
Oakpot,
I have to admit that it was indeed one of those red stickers that initially got me using the term "lava glaze" in relation to the fat frosty Royal Oak white glaze but my use has been intended in a very generic way, referencing the idea of the German "fat lava", rather than a glaze made from lava.
I am intrigued that there is a more specific meaning in reference to Royal Oak pottery, that we are talking real lava here.
Thank you for your correction.
Sadly "brown gloss with a white dip" is a whole lot less evocative way to describe such a fat gutsy glaze.
