CROWN LYNN No 795 PIE FUNNEL ...
Good condition with no chips or cracks, Has no markings but I beleive it to be crown lynn shape No 795, purchased at a church garage sale and was lucky to find it on a crown lynn website...
Pie funnels are steam vents that have been placed in the center of fruit and meat pies (while cooking), They have used since Victorian Times and prevent the pie from boiling over in the oven by allowing the steam created when the fruit filling or other contents are cooking to escape from inside the pie. They also supported the pastry crust in the center of the pie, so that it did not sag in the middle, and are hence also known as "crustholders". Older ovens had more problems with uniform heating, and the pie funnel prevented boilover in pie cooking.
Traditionally they were most often made in the shape of a bird or an inverted funnel with arches on the bottom for the steam to enter, but they have always been produced in a multitude of designs. This trend has been particularly noticeable in recent times, due to their increasing popularity as gifts and collectors' items rather than simply utilitarian kitchen tools.
An interesting piece

Well done Cam!!
I have seen those and didn't know that they were Crown Lynn.
I grew up with a blackbird pie funnel and they are very collectible now!
I will move this into the Crown Lynn Shapes Topic and get Heather to check it with her notes.
When it is confirmed - I would like to use the pic for the gallery if that's ok with you.

Re: CROWN LYNN No 795 PIE FUNNEL ...
I've gone ahead and used the pic with your hand Cam, as this is a good indication of it's size.
I've credited you with the photo ..... many thanks
By the way ... what are the measurements for this piece ....?
Regarding our Crown Lynn Shapes Gallery.....
we also want to replace all of the Museum photos and drawings with members photos.
So there is a long long way to go !!
