I found these images on Trademe of a McAlpine Jug made by Studio Ceramics. On the base is an * this means it is a second from the factory shop.
When I was visiting Phillipa in the Studio Ceramics LTD factory she told me they started putting * on the base of seconds, because people were buying seconds and returning them saying they had bought a first, and wanted a refund or an exchange!Studio Ceramics Ltd factory 'seconds' mark 60945910

Just an update - Pamela Clark who was employed by Studio Ceramics told me that the stars on the bottom were also used to on sample piece as well.
