The Future of Clark House - in Limbo Empty Re: The Future of Clark House - in Limbo

Post  Jackie Clark Sun 29 Jul - 10:16

I don't know if people are interested but earlier this year, the Air Force kindly allowed a large number of we family members to walk around Clark House - or Ngaroma as it was called by my great grandfather - and it was wonderful. I'll post some photos if people are interested, at all. It is in a very sad way in some places, but many original features still remain. Most notably, the beautiful rimu ceiling in my grandparents' master bedroom. I have been in there once before, but never walked around. It makes me sad that the family never held on to it, and even sadder that none of us could afford to buy it now, nor restore it to it's former glory. There is still no definitive word as to what's to happen to it - I understand that the local iwi don't really want it, so heavens knows what will happen to the old girl. It was built with so much love, and my Dad was raised there with all his sisters and brothers. He talked about it often. I don't suppose anyone here has a spare few million dollars?

Welcome to the Forum Jackie Smile
Yes please to photos of Clark House, as most of us would never get a chance to visit the amazing historical homestead.

This would have been the perfect place for a NZ Pottery Museum with all of that pottery history involved!!
I checked out the NZ Historic Places Trust and see that it is registered -

Yes it is - I understand that it was part of the treaty settlement but that the local iwi are not interested in it, mainly because of the expense that upkeep would incur, I would imagine.
