I wonder if these pieces were made for Wellington Laboratories by a local pottery?
I've seen a few pieces with this stamp now.

Does it look like earthenware? The buff colour and seriffed typeface *might* mean if could have been made at Hutson's in about the 1910s-20s. Just a theory though. Other candidates could be Benhar, Glen Afton or even Luke Adams.

A couple more that could be possibilities:

Also New Zealand Potteries Wellington, I have no knowledge of either of these potteries other than seeing a few pieces they have made.

Here's an auction that suggests the maker could be Luke Adams.

Stamped Wellington Laboratories backstamp Empty is that Lucow glaze on the Wellington Laboratories bowl on tm?

Post  Jeremy Ashford Tue 31 May - 16:03

Following up on the tm auction which includes a Wellington Laboratories piece as the work of Luke Adams Pottery I notice that the glaze on that piece has the green-pooling-to-blue look of the Lucow glaze Luke Adams produced for Crown Lynn.

photo labeled 2/7 on enlargement:

Admittedly I have not looked closely at all Adams pieces I have seen for sale but I have been keeping an eye out now and then for the Crown Lynn glazes on their pre-Crown Lynn pieces.

According to the Beach family the Lucow and Basalt glazes were Peter Beach's masterpiece glazes. That's how I read it at least as Sharon showed us two bottles in those glazes and said that her Father was really proud of them. Now I know he wasn't a modeller, he was a glaze chemist and worked at Crown Lynn as one and understood that he developed those two. There are so many unfinished, unanswered questions in our pottery history ....

I must accept that Ev.

However, bearing in mind that the Basalt looks like Tenmoku and the Lucow does look like that (possibly Luke Adams) glaze among others before and after, it's fair to say that Peter Beach created the Crown Lynn glazes, but other similar things had existed previously.

It's the similarity of the name "Lucow" and "Luke" from Luke Adams (Luke-Co??) that keeps bringing me back to such thoughts.

I gotta say though that he made a brilliant job of it. You know how much I like my Lucow and Basalt.

Even though the mark is not quite the same, all things considered, I think this new info from Finn McCahon-Jones confirms this as Luke Adams.
