You can alternatively send photos to newzealandpottery@gmail.com

Post  Ev Mon 14 Mar - 18:32

The Crown Lynn Shapes Gallery is slowly growing, thanks to our dedicated members Very Happy
As there is no complete list of shapes we have to rely of members to find those pieces that are numbered in the Crown Lynn way .... or use other avenues to nut them out eg: the Auckland Museum Crown Lynn records have turned up quite a few. Will have to make more visits until that avenue is exhausted.
Keep those shapes coming in everyone as it helps us all and that's what this site is really all about - people helping other people .... sharing and caring Very Happy

Crown Lynn Shapes 1 - 881 What's missing? - Page 2 Empty Don't forget the 728 beaker! And has the time arrived for the 782 kettle to also go in the gallery.

Post  Jeremy Ashford Mon 1 Jun - 12:09

Congratulations to all.

Ev, for me one of the interesting results from this years new shape number finds is the identification of the new shape 728 beaker resulting from your research at Portage. You have not included it in the list above.

Duplicated numbers
Along with the other numbers for which more than one shape exists, 736, 738, 431, 432, it helps in informing us how numbering was used, and reused, on an ongoing basis. For these four the number for an obsolete shape was reused for a completely different shape. In identifying those four it was helpful, albeit confusing that both sets of numbers were recorded on the pieces themselves (or in modellers' books).

Unnumbered pieces as number duplicates
Where there are no numbers on pieces it is obviously more difficult and hopefully you will find some more answers at Portage. As well as the obvious Tobies, and Coronation and Empire Games mugs, we may find that the butter pat with the same edge as the (Carpay) 735 tray also fits into that 730s grouping.

The 782 story
The 728 story differs in that the 1961 beaker is a revised shape, an example of where one obsolete item is replaced with another which fulfils the same description and purpose. The duplication of the number 728 also serves to remind us that even the shapes that retained the same numbers (eg 805, 781) underwent constant redesign and we will find examples with varying measurements that are nevertheless still the same shape.

778 and 782 electric jugs
The 778 electric jug is an interesting one. Nice to see it finally hit the gallery. It was recorded in the modellers book with a 1961 date, yet a similar shape existed in Ambrico days, so one is led to wonder whether the earlier kettles are also the same number. The early 1960s (re)numberings suggest another example of a number where the number for an obsolete shape was reissued. This one is significant to me as I came to the site as a collector of 782 coffee cans. Anne's electric kettle 782 is clearly a Crown Lynn shape and a Crown Lynn numbering, but because the number 782 has a totally different shape associated with it there has been some doubt. I think we could safely now add it to the gallery with the understanding that while the 778 kettle was redesigned in the early 1960s the 782 kettle was finally dropped from the lineup as an obsolete item and the number given to the coffee can.
Anne's 782 kettle: https://www.newzealandpottery.net/t3275p15-crown-lynn-russell-hobbs-coffee-perk-electric-jugs#11662

1950s shapes still mostly Ambrico
Val recorded comments from Tom Clark disparaging the production of the 1950s, yet those years gave us exciting new product lines: Wharetana, hand-potted, and hand decorated (Steenstra). Until now I have had difficulty with Clark's comment but I am beginning to understand: a huge number of Crown Lynn's shapes came into being before Crown Lynn itself, as Ambrico wares, and the designs prevailed with minor changes until the early 1960s when everything underwent a big revision, and brand new tableware shapes emerged, one outcome of which was the adoption of the new four digit numbering system.

Other ponderings:
Is the Ambrico shaving mug also a 714, another example of a shape update?

Another 6 months have run away and we have found a staggering 8 New Shapes and 2 Museum Pics have been replaced as well as a few reused pesky numbers have been sorted.  Many thanks to the Portage Ceramic Museum for giving us new information and hopefully more will turn up from their records too.  It does take time and patience to get to the bottom of some of these shapes especially in the flatware areas.  Thanks for all of the help with these everyone!
